It may be true that "on this day" is more common than the plain "this day", but on the other hand something like "this very day" is very common without the "on".

This is more common with announcing results, winners, etc but perhaps with some other verbs or situations that I have not considered.

On exactly gives me a sense that something exceptional/in particular happens. It would make more sense working with the definite article which is also used to talk about a particular thing.
